My birthday in Brighton
This is my first post on my new blog about my study abroad experience in Brighton, United Kingdom. And today... is my birthday! I turned 22 today (for the people who are interested).
I’m just going to start at the beginning. For me, it all started on Wednesday the 28th of January. I was packing all my stuff into moving boxes and bags, which was a hell of a job because I found out that I have waaaaay more stuff than I thought I had, and I’m not even talking about the eight stairs I had to walk down and up with all this, I have to admit, unnecessary heavy boxes and bags.
Friday I was finally done moving, and while looking at my room (which was a humongous mess, my mom still hates me for it) I realized that it was really going to happen soon. I already had my leaving party and said goodbye to a lot of people but it still just felt like I was going for a holiday for a few weeks.
I packed my bags so that they would be ready to go the next morning because we had to get up early to drive to Schiphol in Amsterdam. This was easier said than done, of course. My younger sister actually had to sit on my suitcase so I would be able to fully zip it.
The next morning, after an emotional goodbye from my dog, we (me, my parents and my younger sister) had a quick and easy drive to the airport. There I met my fellow study abroad students Amber, Barbra and Bram. We were all set to go! We checked our bags in, (Barbra’s bag was about 7 kilos too heavy, I think she put like gold bars in it) and walked to the assigned gate, still with my parents and my younger sister. I hugged them and said goodbye (honestly, this was kind of hard for me).
We had a good flight to London Gatwick, picked up our suitcases and took the train straight to Brighton. From Brighton we could take the trains to our campuses. Amber and me live at the Falmer campus and Bram and Barbra live at the Moulsecoomb campus which is a bit closer to the centre of Brighton.
Once arrived at my room, I started unpacking my stuff and the only thing I wanted to do was sleep but that was kind of impossible because I didn’t even had a duvet or a pillow. So I actually tried sleeping on my sweater, kind of sad yes I know. So after this disappointment we all decided to go into town to buy ourselves a proper duvet and pillow at the Primark.
The next day we all wanted to do some sightseeing so we took the bus to the centre to get some breakfast first. After breakfast (which was too expensive, but actually really nice), we took a walk to the seafront. We had a walk over the beach and the pier as well, this was wonderful. I mean, the sun was even shining! We had a drink at the pub on the pier and walked through the arcades. Man, those Brits do love those games. They are especially keen on the coin machines. We only played airhockey, which I won at of course.
After this great day, we all had pizza at Bram’s place and socialized with his flatmates. We went out with them as well. We went to a (overpriced but cosy and goodlooking) club near the seafront because all other things were empty or closed because it was Sunday evening of course. Against all expectations we had a really good time. Sweet Barbs and Bram were trying to fix drinks for my birthday, which they did but a bit too early at 2 to 12, but who cares! They sang to me ‘Happy Birthday’ and that was a great way to start my birthday, thanks guys!
Today my mom woke me up by calling me to tell me ‘Happy Birthday’, which was really sweet of her only a bit too early for me. We had to be at the induction at ten o’clock anyway so it wasn’t that bad. The induction was very useful, they told us a lot of information about the courses, field trips and the campus. We also got our unicards, so we can get our two meals a day at the campus restaurant. We had our dinner there and it was standard good food. My hake was a bit cold, but the potatoes and the vegetables were nice. To end this happy birthday of mine, me and Bram had a drink at the Sussex University bar across the road. We’ll not start lessons until next Monday so this Thursday we are going on a fieldtrip to London with other international students as well. Hope it will be fun!

Although it's exactly one month ago: congratulations on your birthday, many happy returns! You're 22 and one month today which is a nice, special age, isn't it -;)? . Hope you're having a good time in Brighton, I assume that your lessons/lectures have started by now and that you'r enjoying your Brighton student life. Fine, green and 'alternative' city on the coast, I think, and close to London which is not a disadvantage either..... Keep us posted and take care, greetz, Jan
